New Year greetings to all,

I hope that your Christmas was as great as mine. I spent three weeks with friends in Cape Town, South Africa and enjoyed all the christmas parties and the extended holiday gatherings!

Was fun, but still glad to be back home and in the swing of things!

Nairobi my home city has been extremely hot and we are still experiencing draught in some parts of the country. The dust in the city is an everyday thing and we are becoming dustproof each day.

Travelled to Western Kenya to catch up with my mother and as usual, plenty of chicken were slughtered, and that concluded my holidays; its taken long but I am finally back in the working zone...

The World Youth Convention we had with The Salvation Army was fantastic, over 1,100 participants from all over the world. It was incredible, different cultures, uniforms, people with different features but all being brought together by one calling for being Salvationsts. It was a great reminder of 'Who we are' As The Salvation Army, a challenge for all young people of this Generation to take on hardcore issues on social responsibilities, social justice, call for officership for soldiership and keenness to talk about 'Holiness' as it applies to The Salvation Army. The worship and focus group discussions were phenomenal.

An opportunity for many to experience Christ in fresh ways, and a chance to see The Salvation Army with fresh lenses until the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. A calling for every person of this generation to take on a role in mentoring others so that there is a generation progression of faith, power and vision.

It was great to meet friends from all over the world we had connected during the Regional team process, from Ghana, Mozambique, Bangladesh, Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania, USA, UK, Denmark e.t.c. The Youth convention in Sweden was a Whirlwind of hope and reflection for all that attended, the application will remain with each person. In Kenya we have had a first meeting of everyone who was in Sweden and we are working on developing a resource pool of young people to be utilized within the Territory for Gods work...

I had a chance to feel youthful and have my face painted....yay Sweden!

Dear Friends,

Its been a while since I last wrote a blog, lots of things have changed since my last entry, the major reason why its taken a while before writting.

First of all, The Regional Team finished end of June last year, and the work was relocated to an Africa Zonal office based in Nairobi.

I am now involved in our own consultancy firm called Kenya Competence ( you can find us on) www.aidscompetence.ning/group/kenyacompetencetrust. Most of you have also seen our blog of dorcus beads http://dorcusbeads.blogspot.com. The jewellery is made from recycled glossy paper.

These things have kept me busy, but have also opened my eyes in what things matter in life. Part of the work ie energy, passion and 'fire', will always remain embedded in my life as it has shaped who I am, and part of it has been transfered while other parts I have let go, growing up into new things and moving on.

The future is 'long', and its exciting, and creates a hunger and expectation to what is 'unseen'. I walk into the future in faith knowing that all will be well, letting go things that hinder my progress and carefully selecting others that add on value.

Passion in Calling!

My name is Captain Mel Deslate,

As corps officer of both Bonteheuwel and Matroosfontein Corps, and administrator of the Nursery School, I feel strongly with the support of a few local people in the corps to grab this wonderful opportunity to host the FRONTIER team. We would like the team to assist us (Bonteheuwel/Matroosfontein) equip and mobilize the corps folk, especially the young people in order to prepare them and our people within the community for 2010 World Cup and beyond.

We believe that with the help of the FRONTIER team living with us in the community for 6 weeks, it will make an impact and influence the lives of our people, especially the young people who are involved with drugs and gangsterism in the community.

Our hopes for the outcome of this exercise and experience is that people’s lives will be changed in their mindsets as well as their lifestyle as they experience the love and compassion of God’s grace. In the long run the community will have an better environment, as the scripture says in 2 Chronicles 7:14 “If my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and heal their land”. I am strongly convinced and believe that the Lord cannot heal the land unless the people in the land are healed from wicked ways.

That there are theological connections to the work we do 'with people'.

When we step out to be with people in homes and in conversations, we are encountering a Spiritual connection that prompts power in others as GRACE is available to all Titus 2:11:

That All have SINNED and fall short of His glory, but Grace is available and Christ died to buy us back.

That we all live because of the original CREATION; People are created in the image of God, in His likeness - we ought to be respective with others, set an example by good character, sound judgment, and seeing God in others.

That INCARNATION is necessary for church expansion and for behavioural change. In homes, in the streets, whatever opportunity we get, because we need to follow that example of Christ of being with the People. Emmanuel, God is with us. We are with people because we are also Ambassadors for Christ, we represent Him and work alongside Him.

That the KINGDOM of God is like a mustard seed, so small and yet grows to produce fruit, Kingdom expressions are not always 'huge', they can pass without being notices, but they are significant. We watch out for this expressions of Kingdom, and we start from there and pray for expansion through good works. We pray that our 'eyes' see and our 'ears' hear those Kingdom expressions while we are in the communities. We are watchful.

That there is HEALING as we engage with people, transformation is possible that leads to living wholly, and find Spiritual and physical HEALTH. This cannot happen unless we are willing to see it happen through participation with others.

Isaiah 61: 2 - 5, The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to preach good news to the poor...

bind up the broken hearted...
proclaim freedom for the captives...
release from darkness for the prisoners.....
to proclaim the year of the Lords favor.....
conform those who mourn.....bestowing on them a crown of beauty....the oil of gladness....and a garment of Praise instead of a Spirit of despair. They will be called, oaks of righteousness a planting of the LORD for the display of His splendor...

We also know that the process, helps us accomplish sense for MISSION..Going out and Making disciples, our Mission is to participate in the expansion of Ministry and Kingdom through participation and being present with others.

The Local response progression as used for many years is for enabling a strategic responses while working with communities. The foundational principles comes from a place of belief, practice and behaviour of a Facilitation Team....the seven steps highlight those key principles for stimulating the response within a community:

Step 1: In the building, we don't go out, we work only in one place, with same people and have a routine.

Step 2: We step out and work somewhere, but the community still comes to us, we don't go to the Community

Step 3: Through strategic engagements at step 2, we are invited into homes and we visit with others, we engage in conversation exploring issues that really worry families and communities, how they respond, what strengths are present and what visions/hopes and dreams families have for their children or their communities. Its not a survey, its not an interview, its a normal home visit with normal conversations with less intimidating questions, instead of asking what is your problem or what do you need? we ask what are you worried about?

Step 4: Continuous home visits stimulate further invitations and suspicion from neighbours and they also invite you to visit them or they join in the home visits, hence neighbourhood conversations begin, led mostly by communities themselves.

Step 5: Neighbourhood conversations continue to build up and eventually become community counselling processes, at this stage, the facilitation team's role shifts completely as the community takes over ownership of the response.

Step 6: Communities over time, feel they need to measure and document their process, this is done systematically with the support of the facilitation team. What is analyzed is more than quantity of response but how are we seeing care? what has changed? how do we see strengths for community/sense for belonging? What elements of visionary leadership have we seen, how is transfer taking place? what is the capacity in this community?

Step 7: Family members/visitors, other people, from other communities visit, and they see the robust response, they are motivated because they are also concerned for their own communities, and they go back and talk to other people, a process emerges and transfer between communities starts.

I recently participated in a four days working group with members of the South African Salvation Army, which covers ( Lesotho, Namibia, Swaziland, St Helena and South Africa). The visit was to support a process for a five year Strategic Planning. The energy and vision in the members who worked tirelessly was inspiring.

We keep praying over that process as it inspires more South African youth, children, women, men and communities to begin responding from a point of strength that is infectious.

Hi all, especially my friends in Bangladesh,

Its been such a long time since we have communicated, but I am hoping that you are all still strong in the Lord and in His Mighty power. Nairobi has been raining for a while reminding me of the last days in Satkhira when the Monsoon winds caught up with us.

How are you all doing? Roni, Sumi, Rimi, Shital, Rupa, Richard, Taposh, Arnest, how is Uncle Joseph, and Tribina, Dipali - and hey! John, how are they all doing?

As for me, I visited Liberia, South Africa, and just led another team in Mozambique through a FRONTIER process. It was very different from what we had in Bangladesh, the concepts same but the methodologies different. We know in Bangladesh the issues were more of child trafficking, huge Spiritual Warfare which the Lord gave us Victory e.t.c in Mozambique, the issues are more of HIV/AIDS, poverty, and reconciliation/stigma. It was very dry and we also ate alot of rice which I know you would all be pleased to hear.

I have shared with some of you, but for those who don't know, our team is coming to an end as of end of June this year. We still know that the Lord has called us for big things, but as of June, we are all seeking/looking for what the Lord has in store for us; We know His plans are perfect.

I encourage all of you not to give up, not to loose focus on what the Lord has invested in you. You are special and carry the Lords work in you. Be aware of people of bad character, stick around people who will influence you, those who think positively. Pray all the time, and remember those who are in need; its not just about you.

I have been involved also with a little business ( blog spot http://dorcusbeads.blogspot.com/ ) making products from recycled magazines. April my friend and I have been doing this for the last 10months and we are using this as another opportunity to have entry points with women in the communities. YCD Connections: Sacrifice

If you have been reading this blog since the beginning in June, you would recall the post on a team of young people I met my first week in Bangladesh. They are not Salvationists but are solid Christians and run trainings on Praise and Worship across Bangladesh.

At this time they are planning on a country wide camp and they will lead many young people to The Lords throne through worship and training on how to be intimate with our Lord Jesus Christ.

I had a chance to connect with them again during my last days in Bangladesh;joined in their rehearsals and their Saturday Trainings in Dhaka.

It was great catching up again and sharing our many adventures. The Sacrifice team is also young but highly gifted and talented. A small group that is changing the face of worship for many young people in Bangladesh, within and outside the Army including non-christian communities.

It was a blessing to meet them and they supported my time in Bangladesh as great friends. As part of the fellowship towards the end of the rehearsal on that day, they raised their hands and prayed for my trip back to Kenya, for Africa and the Mission I have been called to. They asked the Lord to favor me.

The Lord confirmed again that He is present in our lives, He doesn't send us where His presence isn't. The Lord is God.

YCD Connections: Messengers.

I had an opportunity to fellowship and spend two hours with a team of young people at one of TSA Corps in Dhaka. The team calls itself Messengers, they meet once a week, practice songs and talk together as youths who are called for singing for The Lord.

The team is divided in a way that; they have one leaders and divided responsibilities for programming, writing of the songs and leading the rehearsals. They are still young in their Ministry but determined to make it work. Two of the team-mates in the process Roni and Arnest are from that Corps.

These 'presence' connections are very important for young people, its part of the energy needed for keeping the motivation for youth responses and confirming appreciation for changes seen as influenced by young people's actions; - either through small choirs or drama groups or kids clubs. We need to encourage supporting our teams and groups by being present with them.

21 February: Memorial day

On this day, thousands and thousands of citizens of Bangladesh stream to this area. They bring flowers and chant as they walk on the streets. They dont wear shoes on this day; and everyone brings flowers in rememberance of the blood that was shed as warriors fought for independence. Those who are unable to make it to the venue, make little flower fields around their houses.

Its an annual event and very significant to the people of Bangladesh.

As part of my last day in the country, I had a chance to see several historical areas. Captain Dipu, Richard, Martha and myself spend a day learning and reflecting on the history of the country.

It was also a chance for me to see some of the work being done by TSA Bangladesh Command; also visited TSA Training College and spend quality time with the Training Principle Captain Milon.

TimTam for my OZ friends...

Those who are not aware of the Timtams. They are a kind of chocolate biscuits, specifically associated with Australia. The fun part with the Timtams is that they are not eaten as you would eat biscuits....

How to eat them.....

First: You must have coffee, make it the way you like it. Take a Timtam from its box,

Second: Eat both ends of your TimTam leaving the middle chunk.

Third: Dip one end of your TimTam into the coffee holding it with your mouth; and suck the coffee through the TimTam as you would drink anything using a straw ( make sure your hands are behind your back)

Fourth: When you feel the moist of the coffee through the TimTam lift it up, hosting yourself as fast as you can; and swallow it whole....when you leave it too long in the coffee it might not go down well; for you and the coffee.

It could be a game to be used for competitions with young people, or a group of friends, especially when you are bored and hungry!

Kenyan Connection in Bangladesh...

I went to an International Church last Friday. As usual when you are a guest in many churches you are asked to introduce yourself. I introduced myself and when I said I am from Kenya, a lady and a young girl cheered for me. I was surprised but happy too - but again, God does this little cool things so I got over myself.

Cyndi Tilley, and her family, lived in Kenya for 8 years and have five children. One of them who is adopted from Kenya and very cute too. Their children are Mark, Zach, Nina, Emma and Rabecca. Tilley works very hard to home-school the children and her husband Chad is a pilot with Maf.

They invited some Kenyans over for a Kenyan night, and I was glad to join in the celebration. Good times....

Yesterday 21 July 2008, a team of 10 people gathered together to look at a few processes that have been taking place in the Command in the last two months.

The process have been, CFT ( Command Facilitation Teams) SALT visits, the work that has been happening in Satkhira, the SALT workshop and strategic planning for processes in the coming months.

As part of the reflection, the team took me out for lunch to a wonderful place and also presented me with a wonderful gift. Roni was jealous and wanted it. The fellowship was awesome and a few team-mates gave reflections and appreciation to my time here. I was encouraged, The Lord has been good.

The CFT is continually strengthening their response in influencing a way of working in the Command.

Facilitation Team's roles...

When people see a person standing in front facilitationg, most of the time people think, oh! thats just normal, its eary. A facilitation team always spends time working through the concepts, going through process outlines and agree on methodology. A process has to fit with the flow otherwise you loose the focus of the participants.

After working through the process and methodologies and roles agreed; teams spend time preparing for their specific pieces and confirming with each other. It deosnt just happen, everyone works hard to prepare.

SALT workshop

The team has been in a two and half day workshop on the SALT approach and behaviour of a Facilitation Team; but also an opportunity for them to interact with their Officers before they actually begin to share with their own team-mates, friends on what has transpired in the last month and half. It was a quick application of lessons learnt. Its been an inspiring time especially for me, to see the team feeling confident and facilitating the process.

The participants included Salvation Army Officers from different Corps in two Districts in the Command. Health workers from Salvation Army hospital who are also part of the Commanding Facilitation Team. Projects personnel's. Local Facilitation Teams from the community the team has been working in. The young people who have been living together for six weeks. Cadets from the Training College of TSA and the Training Principle e.t.c a great mix of participation to scale the understanding and application of Integrated Mission.

There were very deep reflections emerging from the participants; well as thoughts for application and restructuring ways of working in Corps and in the institutions.

The facilitation of the process was shared between the CFT and the team that had been immersed for six weeks in the community. There have been outstanding outcomes /reflections from the participants. The CFT also feeling strengthened now that there are more people with an understanding of the approach. People who also believe that there is strength in people and communities to respond.

It was on 13 July when we visited Taposh home, his parents are wonderful. They fed us, we fished, some of us swam in the dam, and the older guys played board games and some of us also spent the time sleeping...

We had alot of food, from Taposh to sumis house, every house had prepared wonderful meals;

Taposh cooked Swan for us; its a special meal.

In Jessore...

On our way to a home visit in Jessore...

We arrived in Jessore (nearest city) at around 16hr30 today. Some of the team-mates went to their houses, and some of us are living at TSA projects compound. As part of the evening, we found ourselves in home visits to some of our team-mates homes. We are in town for a couple of days.
